Landscaping and digging the trampoline pit, a total blast!
Spring has sprung! I’m starting to thaw out, hibernation is over and it feels so, so, SO great! I am a desert rat and the never ending winters here are for the birds. Actually birds are smart and they bail to the south. I wish I could…
When we left our beautiful desert town in 2015 I consoled myself that at least we would have trees, but the house bought only had TWO trees! I can not express the depths of my despair (name that movie!?) We are doing an overhaul of the yard and landscaping this spring. It’s such big deal that I separated the project into three phases, it’s too overwhelming to think of it as one big project. Last year I planted a ton of bushes and small trees, there were NO bushes in the backyard at all! Despite all the effort the yard is still really sparse. Here’s what the backyard looks like now, brace yourself for something truly boring:
PHASE 1:
- Define landscape plan
- Plant 15+ trees and 30+ bushes (let’s be honest, this is a big project)
- Disperse decorative boulders throughout the yard
PHASE 2:
- Build chicken coop, check out the progress here
- Build a square foot garden
- Dig a trampoline pit
PHASE 3:
- Install a pergola
- Fix fire pit cement
- Redo front patio area
- Install a hot tub
Okay fine, that last one will probably never happen, but I just wanted to put it in there for fun. But a chicken coop? Yep, that I can do.
After researching for hours phase 1 words like Eastern Redbud and Crabapple just roll off my tongue as easily as “mmmm tacos”. But even after all the reading I’ve just cracked the surface of the wild world of trees. The thing that is most amazing is all the benefits!

Trees are a must, but I have a hard time deciding what to plant where. This is seriously stressing out my husband… which tree/evergreen is your favorite?

Phase 1 is underway, but I have a lot of work to do. I’ll be posting along the way!
Happy Creating!
