This idea all began with an awesome gorilla magnet my super cool sister-in-law gave us for Christmas. She lives in New York City (lucky). It was one of those Christmas mornings where Santa pulls out all the stops and the kids are mesmerized not by the big ticket gifts but by a little magnet… ya, have you been there? I saw a project similar to this on Love and Renovations and knew it would be fun with the kiddos. To get started the boys gathered safari animals from the toy box depths and I started chopping. At let me just say, I will never be a hunter. Poor severed beasts! I actually felt terrible holding down a plastic giraffe head and chopping the body in half. And by the way, the animals are not hollow, the inside looks like the inside of a barbie doll leg (so I got in a super big fight with a sister like 30 years ago and cut off the foot of her favorite Barbie. I’m not proud of it.) or a cheap hot dog. You will be sawing for a while. Be careful! With no solid or flat sides they are hard to hold, so really, really… be safe. Here is no-words-needed picture tutorial.
This project was fun for all of us. Simply cut, glue on magnets, spray paint. It really spruced up the magnet board. My boys think the butt-ends are particularly hilarious (ah, boys). So go find some old figurines and you’ll be delighted by some spray painted animal butts (and heads) in no time!
Happy Creating!
