I’m a rent-a-farm kinda girl

What is it about dirt that makes me so, so happy? Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t like to live in it, I just like to visit it, but still, when I am working in a garden, down in the ground, it’s like all of a sudden I feel connected to… life. This year my family has rented part of a farmers property to go organic! It’s actually a neighborhood effort and Farmer Jim (which is what my kids call him) has a little over an acre fenced off that will become twenty or so rows of delicious plants. We have two rows. Aggressive for us, but so far it has been amazing (in a good way). It’s our new family obsession.

We will plant around 300 starters and we hope to hall in truck loads of food to eat, can, donate, and enjoy. It’s hard work in the desert, and yes the plants go in NOW, not in a month or two. Harvest will be early also. This farm is in addition to our family square foot garden.I’m sure there will be a few posts on this project through the summer. It’s sure to be an adventure! Maybe you can swing on by and eat a garden tomato with me, I think with 32 tomato plants I might just have some extras… Have you ever farmed? Had a big garden? Rented land? Wanted to? I would love to hear your comments.

Happy Creating and Happy Weekend!

I want to come to your house for dinner, let’s say, Aug. 12 at 6.

I wanna come to dinner. Say, May through August. 🙂 we’ve rented garden land before and I loved it! Even though it was a lot of work & we had to haul in our own water every couple days, it was rewarding. Good luck!

How did your garden turn out? In the past we have had a 2400 sq ft garden, with 45 tomato plants, etc., etc….. It was so much fun. We had to take off a year because of the drought here in Cali. It was a lot of hard work, but I enjoyed the canning part. Gardening is so relaxing. 🙂

Okay, 2400 sq ft is seriously amazing. I looooooved the garden and learned so much. I was grateful over and over it wasn’t 1760 and I actually had to feed my children with what I grew! I have to say, the watermelons were my favorite part and I shamelessly devored more watermelon hearts than my share (hey, I was cutting it, so I ate it!) I agree that gardening is relaxing, I daydreamed so much and also felt like such a champion when stuff actually grew. It was this empowering “I helped make that life” kind of thing. I should definitely do a follow up post, thanks for the comment!
