Are you planning a garden this year? Maybe you’re an old pro or a newbie, but either way I hope you plant something… even if it’s an herb in a pot in your kitchen. This post is one of three this week talking about raised garden boxes. We actually have two gardens this year. One we will plant in our side yard and one at a local farmers property that we have renting two rows of planting space… organic here we come! I have made a list of a few points to consider when starting a garden:

  1. What is your climate like? Are you from Tampa, Phoenix, or Juno… or somewhere milder in the middle? The answer will largely determine when, what, and where you plant a garden. Research this before beginning. The only thing sadder than no garden at all is planting a garden that doesn’t grow.
  2. How much space do you have? Do you have oodles of land or 4 square feet? If you have tons of land garden boxes can still be efficient for water and time, but if have little land, then a raised garden box is a great answer for you.
  3. How much time do you have? I’m all for go big or go home, but if you have limited time, keep it simple! Renting an acre from a farmer makes no sense if you are gone 3 weeks out of the month!
  4. What do you like to eat? I have happy childhood memories of sitting in my grandpa’s tomato garden with my own salt shaker and eating those red beauties like they were apples. I always plant tomatoes. Plant what you like!!!

I think raised garden beds are the way to go. Tomorrow I am going to post one we built here (yes in the blazing desert!) and a raised bed I helped my sister build in Colorado last week over Spring Break. Here are a few pics of our raised garden bed party, tutorial to come:
